Human Leadership is The Next Evolution of Leaders


In modern times, managers are not always leaders, and a human-centric approach is becoming the norm. A positive company culture promotes collaboration, employee recognition, and communication, while leaders must engage in self-reflection.

Leadership in a changing world

The 21st century demands that we move from the perspective of solving puzzles to solving mysteries. Constant change brings  new ideas and  behaviors. Leadership in a  changing world requires a  transition from an approach that focuses on planning to one that focuses on creating and becoming. This situation requires an understanding that change is situational, flexible, and adaptive, and the ability to respond and act in changing situations. The  dynamic reality of the 21st century requires a willingness to learn and evolve from situations of internal and external uncertainty, to let go of control, to experience coping, and to learn together. It is  a necessity that entails a transition from a hierarchical model of leadership to an open and collaborative model of leadership that operates within the framework of interpersonal leadership and human development (Dumas & Beinecke, 2018).

Leadership  in  a global  society  requires  critical thinking and  the development  of problem-solving skills, technology orientation, adaptability, and pragmatic and practical skills. Good communication skills, the  ability  to build  interpersonal relationships,  form  teams, and  collaborate  with  internal and  external parties (Goleman et al., 2007).

 


Here are seven suggestions for managers who want to lead people well:

Training - Individuals who work exceptionally well on their own are frequently promoted to higher positions rather than for their people management abilities. As a result, they lack the experience or knowledge necessary to lead a team effectively. Research indicates that the HR manager has the task of implementing training and development initiatives aimed at dispensing the information and skills necessary for proficient and compassionate leadership. Therefore, it is your responsibility as an HR manager to instill a people-first mindset throughout your company and to support managers in advocating for and implementing a people-centric management style.

Keep your attention on the team - A project's success depends on everyone working together. Therefore, encouraging teamwork and camaraderie necessitates that managers interact, inspire, and involve all team members in the development of strategies. Employee performance is increased by inclusivity, and people are more likely to trust a leader who promotes involvement and involves everyone in decision-making.

Communication - Being an empathic leader greatly benefits from dialogue and open communication. Employee happiness depends on involving staff members and being receptive to their thoughts and opinions. Teams with highly engaged members perform up to 27% better. This is a significant figure to improve the overall performance of the company.

Feedback - As a manager, you can gauge the success of your leadership style by conducting surveys regarding team productivity, employee satisfaction, and your leadership style. However, it's crucial to be receptive to criticism, promote candor, and accept feedback.

Empathy - Both personal and professional relationships have evolved in the constantly shifting settings of today. Maintaining a positive work environment requires accepting and understanding individuals for who they are. By providing support to individuals during their challenging moments or engaging in casual conversations about challenges or negative aspects of the job, managers can gain a deeper understanding of employee attitude and the variables influencing productivity.

Accountability - No one enjoys working for a boss who is a control freak and limits their personal development. Rather, granting your staff autonomy and control promotes in them a sense of ownership and duty that pushes them on to perform better.

Recognition -  One of the most important motivating aspects is granting your staff the credit and recognition they deserve for their accomplishments. This cannot be stressed. Employees receive rewards and recognition to let them know that their work is appreciated.

More than 230 HR leaders participated in a 2022 Gartner, Inc. study, and 90% of them said that a leader's success in the modern workplace depends on their ability to manage people.

In March 2022, Gartner conducted another poll with over 3,400 employees. The results showed that only 29% of the respondents said their leader is a "human leader"!

Three elements have been identified by Gartner research as constituting human leadership:

  • Authentic: Demonstrate a purposeful behavior and facilitate authentic self-expression for themselves and their groups.
  • Empathetic: Demonstrate sincere concern, regard, and care for the welfare of your staff.
  • Adaptive: Provide support and flexibility based on the individual requirements of team members.

Today's leaders must adjust their strategies to meet the evolving needs of their workforce, as employees demand a more customized work experience that meets their individual needs. Productivity is increased and a healthy work-life balance is ensured by placing a high priority on flexibility, employee health and happiness, training and support, and independence.
